Passengers fill in their particulars as an SRB enforcement officer watches.

SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) yesterday approved 13 additional express boat trips to ferry more than 1,000 commuters who will be heading home for Gawai Dayak celebration. SRB Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi said all 13 extra trips are for the Sibu/Kapit sector.

He also disclosed that thus far there has been no report on cases of overloading. A big increase in passenger volume is expected for both Sibu-Kapit and Kapit-Balleh/Putai sectors where river transport remains a popular mode of transportation.

During the Gawai Dayak 2017 operation, the average number of passengers passing through Sibu Express Boat Terminal daily had hit the 8,000-mark.

Passenger terminals in Kapit and Song had each recorded about 4,000 passengers while another 2,000 passengers were recorded at Belaga Wharf in Kapit, Hatta added.

Meanwhile, the first phase of the statewide operation for Gawai Dayak Celebration runs from May 25 to May 31 while phase two from June 8 to June 10.

The operation involved other relevant government departments or agencies such as the police (14 personnel), Marine police (five personnel and a boat), Sarawak Marine Department (21 personnel and two boats), Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) with eight personnel, People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) with 12 personnel, Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) with seven personnel and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).
