SIBU: The Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) yesterday approved 20 additional trips as the Gawai Dayak balik kampung crowd swelled rapidly.

SRB Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi said this was the most number of extra trips approved in the run-up to the celebration, with 19 additional trips approved on Tuesday.
“Tomorrow (today) – the eve of the festive celebration – we expect a reduction in the number of passengers as most have returned home to be with their families,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

The Sibu-Song sector has the most with 10 extra trips, followed by Sibu-Kapit (five), Sibu-Kapit-Putai (two), along with one each for Sibu-Song-Kapit, Sibu-Temalat-Song, and Sibu-Song-Nanga Yong.

Hatta said the Sibu Express Boat Terminal handled 5,712 passengers on Monday.

From this number, departures accounted for 4,307 passengers, while the number of passenger arrivals stood at 1,405. The RC pontoon wharf handled 1,244 passengers on the same day, comprising 373 arrivals and 871 departures.

The first phase of the statewide operation for Gawai Dayak, which started on May 25, ends today, while phase two will run from June 8-10.
