SRB approves additional boat trips for Gawai exodus

SIBU: Two additional boat trips were approved yesterday for the Sibu/Kapit sector to cater for the surging number of celebrants returning home for Gawai Festival. The passenger volume at Sibu Express Boat Terminal soared rapidly to 3,000 people on Friday from just 1,548 on Thursday. Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi said: “The two additional trips approved today (yesterday) – one at noon and another at 2.30pm – both for Sibu/Kapit sector.”

He disclosed that there were also two extra trips approved on Friday for the Sibu/Kapit sector.The last express boat leaves Sibu for Kapit at 2.30pm daily. On the other hand, the last express boat from Kapit will only arrive here at 5.30pm. Of the 3,000 crowd passing through the terminal on Friday, 1,783 were from arrivals, while departures accounted 1,217.

The RC pontoon wharf – located a stone’s throw from the terminal, handled 329 passengers on the same day, which comprised 172 arrivals and 157 departures. Meanwhile, the first phase of the statewide operation for Gawai Dayak celebration runs from May 25 till 31, while phase two from June 8 to 10.

It also involves other relevant departments and agencies such as police (14 personnel), marine police (five personnel and a boat), Sarawak Marine Department (21 personnel and two boats), Malaysia Civil Defence Force (APM) with eight personnel, People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela) with 12 personnel, Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK) with seven personnel and Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).
