An SRB officer advises members of the public to watch their belongings.

SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) in cooperation with the police has put in place stringent security measures at Sibu Express Boat Terminal to deter thieves and pickpockets.

SRB Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi said this was in view of the increasing number of people moving through the terminal as Gawai Dayak nears.

“Security measures have been tightened but the public also need to do their part by taking necessary precautionary steps such as not leaving their belongings unattended,” he said.Hatta noted that so far there had been no incident of passengers losing their belongings as the authority had been constantly reminding passengers via their public address system to watch their belongings.

Meanwhile, former policeman sergeant-major Geteh Untam, 62, gave the thumbs-up to the tight systematic control at the terminal.“I am very happy with the system to ease the congestion and ensure the passenger safety at the terminal,” he enthused.Geteh was at the terminal to return to his longhouse, Rh Empang in Sungai Pila, Kapit, for the Gawai celebration.

A total of 4,044 people passed through the terminal on Sunday, of which 1,246 were arrivals while departures accounted for 2,798.

The RC pontoon wharf – located a stone’s throw from the terminal – handled 807 passengers on the same day, comprising 339 arrivals and 468 departures.
