SIBU: Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) yesterday launched a state-wide two-phase safety enforcement operation in conjunction with the Chinese New Year festival.SRB chairman Dr Murni Suhaili said the first phase was from yesterday till Feb 15 while the second will be held from Feb 23 to 25.“The focus is on express boats, speed boats and private boats to prevent overloading.

“River blocks will be mounted at strategic locations. The safety of passengers tops the list of our priority,” he told a press conference after officiating at the launching of the operation at Sibu Express Boat Terminal. Also present were SRB controller Richard Tajan, SRB Sibu assistant controller (Region II) Hatta Morshidi, enforcement officer Zehegkiel Piree and assistant enforcement officer Jerry Lenggir.

Murni said the integrated operation is a collaboration among Sarawak Region Marine Department, the police, Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Civil Defense Force (APM), People’s Volunteer Corps (Rela), and Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (KPDNKK).“Among the core objectives is to ensure that express boats and speed boats comply with the safety requirements and possess valid River Transport Permit (RTP).“Passenger boats are not to exceed the maximum capacity approved,” he said.

He added that SRB also conducts stringent checks on passenger boats, including pre-departure inspections.Boats would not be issued with a departure pass and not allowed to depart from the terminal if they did not comply with safety requirements, he warned.

Stating that the ‘No Ticket, No Entry’ rule is stringently enforced, he urged passengers to adhere to the safety measures, including providing their particulars.

Prior to the launching, Murni distributed safety leaflets to express boat passengers.
